Video game publisher SEGA has announced that it is currently working on launching the classic Sonic CD video game on a range of modern devices, with the release date set for the winter of this year.

The game will be offered on the PlayStation Network service from Sony, the Xbox Live Arcade from Microsoft, the PC via digital distribution and a number of mobile devices, from the Apple made iPhone and iPad to Android and Windows 7 powered devices.

Sonic CD is one of the best known video games featuring the SEGA mascot and was initially launched during 1993 on the MEGA CD system.

The new release will have the same gameplay as the original and will offer the original Japanese soundtrack.

The game sees the evil Dr. Eggman trying to steal all the Time Stones from Little Planet in order to be able to control the future and plant the seeds of chaos.

Players will need to guide Sonic around levels and through time as he recovers the Stones while fighting the robots, including his evil mechanical twin, Metal Sonic.

The Sonic CD modern release will have Achievements for XBLA, Trophies for PSN and a number specifics to iOS.

Haruki Satomi, who is the vice president of Digital Business working at SEGA, stated when the announcement was made, “Ask any Sonic fan to name their favourite games, and Sonic CD always ranks near the top of their lists.”

He added, “Sonic CD marks an important chapter in Sonic’s history, bridging the gap between his oldest adventures and his new digital exploits like Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I. We’ve made sure the re-mastered edition has everything that Sonic fans want to see with all of the original colourful classic zones.”
