The Sonic universe will soon get a major shakeup with the new Boom continuity and the teams at both SEGA and Nintendo are eager to reveal that the main villain of the experiences that are coming to both the Wii U home console and the 3DS handheld is an entirely new creation named Lyric.

The two companies have worked with developers Big Red Button and Sanzaru Games in order to create a terrifying new enemy that the teams made up of Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks need to face in the upcoming Sonic Boom title.

Lyric is described as a giant snake with monster characteristics that is the sole survivor of ancient race, with a powerful body armor that uses advanced technology.

His current plan is to destroy the entire world of Sonic Boom using an advanced robotic army and all he needs is the power source for them, so the players need to move fast and use the unique abilities of all the characters they control in order to stop him in time.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is the new name of the Wii U bound video game in the series, which will make full use of the CryEngine technology from Crytek in order to deliver unparalleled graphics quality on the Nintendo home console.

Each level will include complex layers of detail that will challenge the player to use Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks, taking advantage of their abilities and unique powers in order to progress, with a focus on intense combat sequences and on puzzle solving.

A new gameplay feature will be the Enerbeam, an energy-based cord that can be used by characters in order to navigate the world like they have never before done in a Sonic title.

Enemies will use shields to protect themselves from attack and gamers will be able to explore alternate paths through levels in order to avoid them.

The 3DS Sonic Boom title is called Shattered Crystal and it will have its own unique characters and environments to visit.

The plot will be centered on Lyric as he kidnaps Amy and gamers will have to deal with more classic platforming sections and puzzles than in the Wii U title.

Unique collectibles will be included in the 3DS titles, which can then unlock special content on the home console and Stick will play a much larger role in Shattered Crystal.

Both titles should be launched before the end of the year.
