Bob Rafei, the chief executive officer at developer Big Red Button, says that one of the main influences for the newly announced Sonic Boom universe is Nathan Drake, the main character of the Uncharted series from Naughty Dog and Sony.

He tells CVG that, “I was part of the team that created Uncharted, so it’s hard to take the DNA out of that. We’re making the games we want and want to play and it’s hard not to tap into, what feels right to you.”

Members of the studio also have experience with other franchises that are influencing Sonic Boom, like Jak and Daxter and also Ratchet and Clank.

Rafei adds, “We took the best of what we know from those games and applied it to what works for Sonic canon. That was really important to us, not to make another Ratchet and Clank game or another Jak and Daxter game. It was important to make sure that it feels like a Sonic game.”

The team is currently not offering any gameplay details about the new Sonic experience and there are no hints as to how the storylines of the universe are being rebooted.

Boom will arrive with a new animated television show in tow and there are also toys that are designed to use the new design.

SEGA says that it wants a new universe that appeals directly to Western fans and has the ability to rekindle interest in the long-running franchise.

The Sonic Team in Japan will continue to work on its own project that uses the character, which is expected to arrive on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and the Wii U.

At the moment, the Naughty Dog team is also developing a new Uncharted title that will be offered exclusively on the PlayStation 4 from Sony.
