A number of users claim that they no longer want to install Windows 8.1 Update

Windows 8.1 Update was released earlier this month, but a number of users still can't deploy it due to several issues experienced during the installation process.

Unsurprisingly, some of the users who tried but failed to install Windows 8.1 Update no longer want to do it and instead prefer to stay on Windows 8.1 for the time being.

While Microsoft has already provided some workarounds for those experiencing issues, it appears that not everyone can install Windows 8.1 Update, again due to a number of errors showing up after initiating the setup.

Of course, this quickly led to frustration among users, and some say that sticking to Windows 8.1 is a much better choice for now, at least until Microsoft addresses the problems and makes the new release work for everyone.

“None of these are solutions for me. I will not refresh my PC, I will not do a repair install. As it is my 'upgrade' key doesn't even let me download the windows 8.1 iso and every time I have had to install new hardware on my computer, I have had to reactivate my windows via Microsoft's Helpdesk since they are royally screwed up my CD Key. Microsoft needs to get back on the ball and stop releasing everything half assed,” one of the affected users said in a post on the Microsoft Community forums.

The problem is that Microsoft is making Windows 8.1 Update mandatory, so those who do not want to install it will no longer receive patches and security fixes via Windows Update during the Patch Tuesday rollouts.

Redmond explained that making this update mandatory was a must because all future Windows improvements would be based on this one, so everyone should download it as soon as possible.

“The Windows 8.1 Update is a required update to keep Windows 8.1 devices current. It will need to be installed to receive new updates from Windows Update starting on May 13th. Customers who have Automatic Update turned on don’t need to be concerned because the update will be installed for them automatically prior to May 13th,” the software giant explained.

Windows 8.1 Update comes with plenty of improvements for desktop computers, including context menus right on the Start screen, as well as options to pin Metro apps to the taskbar and launch them without the need for going to the Modern UI, and thus sticking to the desktop.
