14 DAY TRIAL // Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s sister, has often joked about being so upset with comparisons to her sibling that she might even “go crazy like Britney.” Not that this has anything to do with it, but a less attentive observer might believe she actually did just that, since paparazzi shots that just emerged show the singer with a buzzed cut, much in the manner Britney got during her now-infamous public meltdown that culminated with her admission to a mental health facility in the winter of 2008.
Solange was spotted the other day taking her son to school, sporting a new, bolder and definitely nice ‘do, with her hair cut close to the skull. As many jumped to conclusions to say that she was actually making some form of statement – such as, say, putting herself in a different league than Beyonce's by avoiding confusions with her, or showing women that beauty was not all about long hair – Solange herself is taking it to Twitter to explain.
“Listen, if I wanted to make a statement, I would have twitpic’d [uploaded pictures]. I was simply taking my son to school. Stupid paps took pic. I’ve had my hair cut like this for two weeks. I was NOT inspired by anyone but myself. I have done this twice in my llife [sic.]. I was 16. I was 18. Did not care about your opinion then. Don’t care now. Don’t need your attention. I am #3 trending topic [on Twitter] before IRAN and some of you can’t even locate it on a map. It’s sad. I just wanted to be free from the bondage that black women sometimes put on themselves with hair. I’m not mad at all of you that have made your opinions know [sic.] and have sent negative energy my way. I expected this of you.” Solange writes.
As noted above, Solange has often joked about herself and her sister, as well as about the lengths she would go to to distance herself from her. Granted, her jokes were prompted by speculation in the media that, no matter what she did, she could and would never be more than just Beyonce’s sister. “I get asked about Beyonce all the time but I try and make fun of it. Sometimes I say she’s not my sister. Other times I say I’ve stuffed her in my suitcase and sent it to Dubai. I have to have fun with it or I’ll turn into Britney – shave my head and go totally crazy.” Solange was telling the media a while back.
Irritatingly enough, her words are now coming back to haunt her. Other than that, fans seem to be very receptive to the drastic change, saying Solange doesn’t really need hair to be beautiful.
