According to the most recent details on the Internet, the Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices is preparing to update its line of desktop processors with the introduction of its new single-core, AM3-compatible processor. Dubbed Sempron 140, the new CPU model is designed to provide users with support for DDR3 memory, while its price tag and power specifications make it a noteworthy alternative to other CPU models currently available on the market.

AMD's first socket AM3-ready, single-core Sempron processor, the Sempron 140, will be made available this week, having already surfaced on the websites of several online retailers. The new part is expected to become an alternative for those users looking for a cheap CPU that can provide support for DDR3 memory and an optimum performance level. There are only a few details available at this time, but it looks like the chip will be compatible with the latest AMD platforms on the market.

The new Sempron 140 is manufactured using a 45nm process technology and features a clock speed of 2.7GHz. This has been coupled with 1MB of L2 cache and a TDP level of 45W. It is designed for Socket AM3 platforms and will be coupled with DDR3 memory in some of the upcoming desktop PCs. Although we have no details on the processor's availability date, it is expected to make its way in stores across Europe starting this week.

As far as pricing goes, AMD's upcoming Sempron 140 processor should become available for prices in the range of US$40. This new part will allow users to take advantage of more affordable desktop PCs, providing them with a mix of single-core processing power and fast DDR3 memory. Such systems are likely going to be made available for multimedia enthusiasts.
