AMD's socket 939 is phasing out

In case you still want a 939 CPU, you'd better hurry since AMD is already phasing out 939 units and they will probably be sold only until the end of 2006. Maybe if you know someone who knows someone you might be able to get one until June the 30th 2007 which is the date where the 939 CPUs will officially be removed from AMD's roadmaps.

The CPUs may still be sold as a result of the channel suppliers still keeping 939 stocks on sale, but because they won't be produced anymore, 939 CPUs will slowly disappear. Curiously enough, Socket 754 will live 3 months more before being kicked out the door, mainly because 754 parts are significantly cheaper and that translates into a bigger profit. Also, the fact that motherboard makers keep producing large quantities of mobos for socket 754 should help Semprons survive longer than 939 CPUs.

In the 3rd quarter of 2006, 993 and 754 parts were happily selling until they reached 60% of all the total sales concerning AMD's CPU line. Because they are phasing out, 939 CPUs will exit the picture and AM2 line will take over all of AMD's production line.

By the end of the first quarter, AM2 will be dominant, with more than 90% of overall CPU market being represented by the F stepping. Another 5% will go to Quad FX socket 1207, with the rest being represented by 754 Semprons. Keep in mind also that F2 stepping is arriving and with it comes the 65nm revolution and you'll understand that AM2 is here to stay for quite a while.
