Right before the Oscars 2011, James Franco announced he’d joined Twitter, in what would be the first time ever for a host of the awards ceremony to cover the event live on a social network. His account is no longer available now, and he explains it by saying that “social media is dead.”

The @JamesFranco account is now on private, which means fans who followed the actor can’t do that anymore unless he gives them permission first.

Asked about the decision to leave Twitter (of sorts), Franco says that there’s really no future to social networks like it or Facebook, PopEater informs.

“Social media is over. Still up there. Going down. You heard it here first,” the actor says.

Another reason for the decision to scale down his Twitter usage was that he was criticized for the things he tweeted.

“My thought was ‘this is my Twitter. I can do whatever I want.’ But certain companies I work with contacted me about what I was saying,” he says.

Choosing to quit Twitter after the Oscars will, of course, do nothing in terms of making rumors go away that he only set up the account in the first place to drum up attention for the awards show and his hosting gig.

With that over, there was no use for the account anymore, word online has it.

Speaking of the hosting gig, on a recent Letterman appearance, Franco broke his silence, and responded to criticism and comments that he was stoned during the awards, which explains why he did such a poor job as host.

Nothing could be farther from the truth: Anne Hathaway was simply too energetic for him. Franco wants the world to know that he did his best to be a good host.

“I love her, but ... I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to Anne Hathaway. I haven’t watched it back. Maybe I had low energy. I honestly played those lines as well as I could,” he said, as we also informed you the other day.

“I never dreamed of being, like, the best Oscar host ever. It was never on my list of things to do. It doesn’t mean I didn’t care and it doesn’t mean I didn’t try, right?” Franco added.
