German politicians are quite taken with Snowden and want to grant him asylum

It’s not only public figures like writers and actors trying to get Berlin to give Snowden asylum, but also numerous political parties.

It seems that the opinion that Germany should protect the NSA whistleblower is shared by most parties. According to Der Spiegel, the chairman of the Left Party, Bernd Riexinger, demanded asylum for Edward Snowden and mentioned that he was a hero, not a traitor.

“Three of the four parties are for it. In the Bundestag, the political will is clear,” Riexinger told Der Spiegel when talking about the idea of offering Snowden asylum.

Furthermore, he believes there’s a viable and legal method to bring Snowden to Germany in a safe way and to also protect him from extradition to the United States.

Edward Snowden is currently under Russia’s protection, where he received temporary asylum at the beginning of August. This means that until next summer, Snowden can consider if he wants to extend his stay in Russia or to move on to another country.

Numerous nations have already offered their help to the whistleblower, while others have expressed their openness to consider his request if he decides he wants to apply for asylum in their nations.

Whether Germany would really protect Snowden from the US and will resist the American attempts to get him extradited is unclear. Given the relationship between the two countries and the fact that the leaked documents published so far have mentioned Germany as one of NSA’s little helpers, chances are they’re not going to like future stories too much.

Ecuador has stated once more that they’ll consider and possibly approve of giving Snowden asylum, should he make the request following the country’s laws, meaning he’d have to go through the country’s embassy.

In the meantime, however, Snowden has begun working for Russian social network VKontakte, where he takes on the job of technical support.
