Mac OS X 10.6 to mark Apple’s last wave of boxed software to ever reach customers

Apple is getting MobileMe customers to hop aboard the iCloud by offering them free copies of Mac OS X version 10.6 aka Snow Leopard. The software is the interim step between OS X Leopard (v.10.5) and OS X Lion (v. 10.7), the latter being the only Mac OS to currently support iCloud on Macintosh computers.

Mac fanatics are beginning to report that the Snow Leopard DVDs promised by Apple for their iCloud upgrade have arrived in the mail.

Reportedly, the discs arrive bundled with a printed copy of the End User License Agreement, or EULA in short.

The Snow Leopard DVD is likely the last remnant of Apple’s boxed software. The company has long discontinued physical copies of its software, and it appears Mac OS X 10.6 will be “the last straw” for Apple.

With MobileMe switching off this summer, it’s probably a good time to consider taking Apple up on their offer to have them ship a Snow Leopard disc to your door and cut 30 bucks from your total bill for iCloud membership.

A Mac OS X Leopard user would normally have to pay his / her local Apple store a visit, buy a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.99 (around 22 EUR, or equivalent in foreign currencies), return home, slide the disc in their Mac, install Snow Leopard, use software update to grab version 10.6.8 (which contains the Mac App Store), and finally download and install OS X 10.7 Lion which comes bundled with iCloud.

Apple is saving customers some of the trouble by shipping the disc directly to their address.

MobileMe customers can log in with their credentials at this address here and ask Apple to send them the DVD.

This deal will only be around for a little longer, so act fast if you’re looking to benefit from this offer.
