Watch Dogs and EA Sports UFC are also performing well

Sniper Elite 3, the new first-person shooter from developer Rebellion and publisher 505 Games, takes the number one position in the United Kingdom video game chart during its debut week, showing that World War II is still capable of drawing an audience among gamers.

The title is designed, as the name implies, to focus on the long-range kills that a sniper armed with a high-powered rifle can deliver and takes gamers to the new environments of North Africa, with a pre-order bonus mission allowing gamers to try and take out Hitler himself.

On launch, the game was affected by a scandal linked to a number of keys that were revoked by Steam, which were then revealed to have been stolen.

Second place in the UK chart for the week ending on June 28, according to UKIE, belongs to former number one Watch Dogs from Ubisoft, which continues to perform well just as the publisher talks about the way it can expand on its mechanics in a very likely sequel.

The last place on the podium belongs to EA Sports UFC, the title that uses the Ignite engine to deliver a very accurate if overly complex simulation of one of the most violent sports seen in the real world and allows fans to unlock and to use Bruce Lee as a combatant.

TItanfall, from developer Respawn Entertainment and publisher Electronic Arts, is in fourth place, dropping one position when compared to the previously tracked period, and Wolfenstein: The New Order, from Machine Games and Bethesda, is in fifth.

FIFA 14, the football sim from EA Sports, shows no sign of dropping out of the top ten and clearly benefits from the popularity of the real-life World Cup in Brazil, which is featured in both the Kick-Off and the Ultimate Team modes.

This week’s other new entry is GRID Autosport, the racing game from Codemasters that is launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, with no versions for next-gen consoles.

The game looks pretty good and delivers a variety of vehicles to use and tracks to race on.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, from Infinity Ward and Activision, remains glued to eighth place and is followed by the Xbox 350 version of Minecraft, the indie hit from Mojang.

The PlayStation 3 version of the same experience closes down the UK top ten, which no longer features Mario Kart 7 for the Wii U.
