Rebellion, the developer of the upcoming Sniper Elite 3 first-person shooter, has confirmed that the game has a day-one update that occupies a whopping 10GB on the Xbox One platform, consisting mostly of optimizations and support for future multiplayer DLC.

Sniper Elite 3 is out on June 27 in Europe and July 1 in North America, but early copies have already been given out to members of the press.

What's more, a special day-one update for the game on Xbox One has been shared on the Xbox Live platform for all those who are playing it right now.

The update weighs in at a huge 10GB and Rebellion has explained just why owners of Sniper Elite 3 will have to download such a huge file to update the game.

Apparently, the patch implements a lot of enhancements that were made after the game went gold and is needed to ensure multiplayer compatibility.

"The main part of the update is to sync data between the game's retail discs and the Xbox Live digital download edition of the game. In the several weeks between sending the code off to manufacture and release, rather than sit around or take a break, we've continued to work on the game, making improvements and optimizations," the studio told Eurogamer.

"We've also begun work on multiplayer DLC and a small part of this update is to introduce a compatibility pack. This is standard for any game that adds DLC - it's just to make sure everyone can have the same multiplayer experience whether they own DLC or not."

The studio also emphasized that the 10GB patch will actually end up reducing the mandatory install space for the game, from 21GB to 19GB.

"While we understand gamers will be frustrated at the wait, the good news is that the update will actually reduce the size of the game's total install footprint on their hard drive, and reduce the size of future patches significantly."

The optimization process will continue in the near future as the studio wants to ensure that Sniper Elite 3 handles as smoothly as possible on all platforms.

"It's part of this ongoing optimization process that's enabled Sniper Elite 3 to perform well at a native 1080p on both Xbox One and PS4. We appreciate everyone's patience and we firmly believe Sniper Elite 3 will be worth the wait!"

As such, if you plan on buying Sniper Elite 3 later this week, ensure you have around 30GB of space for the install and patch.
