Visitors to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo can now catch a glimpse of an adorable sloth bear cub born about six months ago, on December 19, 2012.

Only 18 zoos across the United States presently exhibit this species, which is why people will most likely flock to see Hank, as this sloth bear cub is named.

Zoo staff explain that the cub has spent the past six months hidden in a den together with its mom, Hana.

Now that is has finally emerged from its hiding place, it seems eager to explore its surroundings and show off its climbing skills.

“Sloth bears in general are full of personality, but watching Hank explore and play in his yard is especially endearing,” keeper Mindy Babitz said.

Despite being very young, Hank has already learned to show some body parts or open his mouth on command.

Its caretakers explain that this will help them better evaluate its health as Hank continues to grow.
