An update-packed week for users of listed Mac software

Quite a few popular Mac apps have seen their code modified this week, bringing enhancements and fixes for license/copy holders. Some are free, others are paid, but pretty much all of these apps are considered must-have pieces of software for power users.

Maintain’s general-purpose utility, Cocktail, is now at version 4.7.6. The update adds the ability to clear Apple System logs and diagnostic messages, the ability to disable the “This file has been downloaded from the internet” Finder warning, and the ability to view .asl and .crash logs.

Chrome, Google’s WebKit-based web browser, has only seen enhancements on the developer front. According to a blog post signed Karen Grunberg, of the Google Chrome development team, version 6.0.458.1 brings the following new additions for all supported platforms, including Mac OS X:

- InfoBar should not be shown when the user first submits a form - AutoFill should continuously update profile data as the user submits forms with new data AutoFill: Aggregate profile data. Remove the AutoFill InfoBar. Remove more remnants of shipping address and CVV - When editing a field in a previously auto-filled form, only display unique suggestions AutoFill: Remove duplicate suggestions when providing suggestions for a field - Enabling sync freezes Chromium Remove NIGORI from the sync routing info

In a less routinely manner, the renowned global notifications system known as Growl has been updated to version 1.2.1 (Build 091ed21e8314) changing a lot of stuff since its last revision. Here’s a list of highlighted changes from what is the largest Growl changelog in the past year:

- New disk image background - Fixed Spanish translation error in disk image background - Replaced GrowlMail in Extras folder with a link to the GrowlMail web page, since it's now separate from Growl releases - Updated copyright ranges to include 2010 - Handles old plug-ins you can't use anymore more sanely - Speech display now reads notification titles as well as descriptions - WebKit-based displays are now much, much faster - Growl now automatically detects when you put plug-ins in the PlugIns folder yourself - GrowlSafari: Restored your ability to click a “Download finished” notification to reveal the downloaded file in the Finder - Growl.framework: Updated minimum OS version for Growl, preventing bogus installation prompts - growlnotify: Now uses an Installer package for installation

Moving on to the fourth noteworthy update for the week, iStat Menus 3.03 is now available from Bjango, the developers of the menu extras suite. The new release adds: support for sensor monitoring on 2010 MacBook Pros and Mac Minis; an optional moon phase icon to the Date & Time extra; an optional transparent calendar icon to the Date & Time extra; an option to hide UPSs from the menubar; improved stability and city searching. The following bugs have also been fixed, according to Bjango:

· Fixed bug with fan speeds being reset to default after sleep. · Fixed bug with UPSs not showing as charged. · Fixed localizations with fuzzy clock. · Fixed some installer bugs. · Mono battery icons now show in white when selected.

Another system utility, this time one that cleans up the jung on your Mac has been updated as well. MacPaw’s CleanMyMac, now at version 1.9.2, “seriously” improves the 'Trashes & Leftovers' module, allowing the Application Leftovers search to find all the resources left after an improper application uninstallation. The new version brings overall performance improvements, a Caches Ignore List, and an 'About' window, to name some noteworthy additions. Most importantly, the new version improves the Application Uninstaller, which  now finds even more related resources, according to MacPaw. See the full changelog for more details.

Camtasia, the last update we’re here to talk about this week, has been updated to version 1.1.1. Developed by TechSmith Corporation, Camtasia allows users to to make a movie from content recorded off their computer screen. The updated version now correctly updates 1.0 projects with unicode text in folder name, project name, or source media to the current version. Projects with source media or project names using certain character sets should now save and export correctly, the developers add, while exporting a project with two consecutive clips with noise reduction should now complete successfully. Thumbnails for video recording options should also show correctly in the Recorder UI. A couple of bugs have been addressed as well - fixed a conditional crash when starting recording; fixed a memory leak in the export process.
