Slackel Live KDE 4.10.5, a distribution based on Slackware and Salix that uses the Salix tools and packages, has been released and is now available for download.

The developers of the Slackel KDE are not trying to get the newest packages into the operating system, but to provide a stable experience for all users, which is the most important aspect for any Linux distribution.

“Slackel live has been created using Slackware Live tool for Slackware / Slackware64 /  Slackware-ARM Linux. This tool has been further developed to support keyboard and locale setup on the fly, to add boot menus and splash image, to support booting on 14 locales and timezones, to set root's password, create a new user with password and remove the liveuser, to set the keyboard and locale, set the hostname etc when installing on hard disk.”

“Also supports installation on USB as frugal install so user can boot the system with persistence changes. There is no need to create a persistence file. (e)lilo is the installed boot loader if user want it,” says the developer.

The Slackel KDE 4.10.5 Live distro comes with SLI, a minimalistic and optional GUI to install or copy the live system that comes with a few interesting features. For example, support has been added for setting the root password on the installation system, support has been implemented for creating a user name and user password on the installation system, a partition manager connectivity function has been added in the GUI (gslapt), and support for core, basic, and full installation mode has been added as well.

Also, Slackel Live KDE 4.10.5 is based on Linux kernel 3.10.30, which is an LTS release. This is not the newest one available, but it’s a version that has been proven to be very stable. The developer has also integrated Firefox 24.5.0 ESR (extended support release) as the default Internet browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications, Clementine 1.2.1 is the default music player, and much more.

Other applications that have been implemented are Krita, Karbon, Gwenview, KColorChooser, KSnapshot, Calligra, Dragon multimedia player, K3b 2.0.2, and a few others.

All Slackel distributions are based on Slackware and Salix, but the developers are making their own personal blend. Slackel is also called the Hellenic Linux Distribution due to the fact that it's built in Greece.

Slackel Live KDE 4.10.5 was developed for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures and the images can be easily burned on a CD, or it can be used from a regular USB stick.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download Slackel Live KDE 4.10.5 right now from Softpedia.
