The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the open world first person action role playing game from Bethesda, has managed to take the top position in the United Kingdom video game chart, ahead of the first person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which had kept the top spot for one full month.

The two games were launched close to one another in early November and have dueled for the number one position since then and the role playing game has finally managed to overtake the shooter, ready to greet Christmas in the lead.

With the number one and two settled for the long term Just Dance 3, the rhythm game from Ubisoft, has managed to gain one position to reach third place and seems poised to do well in the long term, lacking any significant competition.

Meanwhile FIFA 12 from EA Sports has dropped two positions to end the week, which finished on December 11, at number four while Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, another Ubisoft video game, has managed to also limit its losses and go from third place to fifth.

Battlefield 3, the first person shooter from DICE and Electronic Arts, has benefited from the launch of the first major downloadable content pack and has managed to go from ninth place in the chart to sixth, the biggest rise in this weeks United Kindom chart.

Professor Layton and the Specter’s Call from Nintendo has managed to keep seventh place while Saints Row: The Third, the open world action game from THQ, has gone to eight place coming from sixth.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception also saw a bounce this week and managed to re-enter the top ten in ninth place while Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS closes down the chart after a good run that managed to revive the fortunes of the much maligned handheld.
