Skype, the popular service that enables mobile phone users, and not only, to make VoIP calls, has just announced the release of SkypeKit, a beta version of a collection of software and APIs, meant to offer the possibility to integrate Skype voice and video calls into any web-connected device or applications. According to the company, starting today, those interested in SkypeKit can sign up to receive an invitation to the SkypeKit Beta Program.

According to Skype, any device that benefits from web-connectivity can potentially be used as a communication device. The company forecasts that the future would offer people the possibility to connect and communicate with friends or family no matter where they are, or what they are doing. Whether in the car, watching TV at home, or doing something else, staying in touch with other people should be possible.

“That's why we're so excited to announce SkypeKit, a collection of software and APIs that allows Internet-connected devices or applications to offer Skype voice and video calls. SkypeKit is designed to work with a wide variety of chip sets, operating systems, and audio/video devices. Think of SkypeKit as a 'headless' version of Skype--that is, it runs invisibly with no user display. That way, developers are free to surface and deliver Skype functionality through their own products' interfaces,” the company announced.

Through the use of SkypeKit, any connected device can benefit from the capabilities and features of Skype, the company states. For the time being, the new collection of software and API's is only in a beta version, thus being delivered to a limited number of beta partners. However, starting today, June 23, Skype offers developers interested in the solution the possibility to register to receive an invitation to the SkypeKit Beta Program.

“SkypeKit will not only include a robust set of APIs for a variety of popular Skype features, including voice and video calling and instant messaging, it will also deliver Skype’s signature super wideband audio, based on the SILK codec. In addition, developers who use SkypeKit will be able to describe them as plugged into Skype,” the company states. More details on the new SkypeKit Beta Program are available on the company's website here.
