The teams in charge of the Skylanders franchise at publisher Activision and developer Vicarious Visions are announcing that the coming installment in the series is called SuperChargers and will be launched on September 20 in North America on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, the Wii U, older home consoles, and the iPad.

The company plans to deliver the same content to Asian players on September 25 and one day later in Europe.

The big selling point for Skylanders SuperChargers is the fact that vehicles are being added to the toy line-up, with gamers able to explore land, sea and sky with more than 15 unique creations, which include classic race cars, but also hybrids and even submarines.

New environments are also being added to the title and combat has been expanded to take all the additions into account, although the new mechanics have not yet been detailed.

15 new heroes are also coming to Skylanders SuperChargers and the 300 already existing ones can be paired with the new items in a variety of ways.

Vicarious Visions and Activision are not yet ready to name all the changes that are coming to the title, and more information will be delivered during the E3 2015 event.

The announcement trailer for Skylanders SuperChargers shows some cool moments, but fans will need to get a more in-depth look at all the heroes and vehicles.

The Activision toy game faces competition from a range of new experiences

The biggest threat in terms of popularity is the Disney Infinity line of experiences and figurines, which has managed to capture the imagination of gamers with its variety of characters.

In the fall, its fans will be able to get access to a line-up that focuses on Star Wars, featuring both the original and the second trilogy, and undoubtedly elements associated with The Force Awakens will also be introduced.

LEGO Dimensions is also coming before the end of the year and will benefit from the popularity of the toy line on which it is based.

Nintendo is also working hard to promote its Amiibo line and to integrate the figurines into more Wii U and 3DS video games before the end of 2015.

Skylanders has been at the forefront of the new evolution of the toy-based genre, and it will be interesting to see what impact SuperChargers has on September 20.
