Developers of “Sky Go” confirmed last month plans to release an Android application that would allow Sky TV customers to watch their favorite shows directly on their smartphones.

Today, the developers announced the availability of “Sky Go” in the Android Market. Unfortunately, the application is only compatible with a handful of smartphones and does not offer Ice Cream Sandwich or tablet support.

For the time being, “Sky Go” for Android only works on HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S, and Samsung Galaxy S II.

Although the devs promise to add more compatible devices in the following weeks, there’s no telling when exactly ICS-powered owners, as well as tablet users are able to get the application.

We're extremely happy to announce the roll out of Sky Go on selected Android handsets today and the arrival of the Sky Entertainment channels to mobile devices,” said Holly Knill, head of Sky Go.

To make the launch even more appealing to Sky TV customers who own Android devices, Sky confirmed it would also stream three additional entertainment channels on the Sky Go service: Sky 1, Sky Arts 1 and Sky Living.

Users will be able to access a number of live channels, including Sky Atlantic, Sky Sports Channels, ESPN, Sky News and Sky Movies. It is also worth mentioning that the Formula One channel is expected to land on Android devices sometime next month.

We are always working to ensure that Sky customers have more ways to watch content they love, whether it's the big Premiership game, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Modern Family or Ruth Jones' Stella, and this is exactly what this enhanced version of Sky Go delivers,” concluded Knill.

“Sky Go” is now available as a free download in the Android Market and should be compatible with the following smartphones: HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Incredible, HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S, and Samsung Galaxy S II.
