The other day, rapper Nicki Minaj released the highly anticipated music video for her new single, “Anaconda,” which, if we’re to be delicate, we’d probably describe it as a 4+-minute ode to the “phat” backside. The video already has over 23 million views so it’s definitely a hit; but skinny girls are taking offense with it.
Nicki is one of those few female celebrities to make the big backside and tiny waistline a thing with regular women; the other is, of course, reality star Kim Kardashian.
She’s also famously not shy when it comes to twerking on stage or dressing provocatively so, in many ways, few were actually surprised that she would come out with a video like the one for “Anaconda.”
Even so, there are voices who say that she should stop promoting demeaning stereotypes about women and be a bit more feminist for a change. Even more voices are taking offense with the fact that this is what pop music / entertainment has come to mean: girls with generous backsides shaking it for the camera in skimpy outfits.
Then there’s another group of outraged viewers: the women whom Nicki targets right at the end, with the lyrics “[Expletive] the skinny [B-word]s / [Expletive] the skinny [B-word]s in the club!” As these skinny women see it, that’s Nicki dissing them for no apparent reason. And they’re furious!
Twitter is still being flooded with reactions to the “Anaconda” video and they’re mostly still positive. However, as the fine (and totally safe for work) selection of tweets embedded below confirms, not all of them praise Nicki for her most recent release.
If Nicki replaced “fat” for “skinny” in that lyric, everyone would jump and cry discrimination, they say. Just because Nicki happens to have the ample curves that she has, it doesn’t mean that she’s right to target a specific group of women like that.
Speaking of curves, there’s also another aspect to consider – which these ladies are careful to remind Nicki about: she doesn’t have them from Mother Nature, she bought them, including breasts and that ample bum she’s so proud to shake whenever she gets the chance.
A very old rumor claims that Nicki, just like Kim Kardashian and other female stars who get attention on a daily basis for their unlikely figure, wasn’t always this well-endowed. She denied it repeatedly, but the photos online don’t lie: something happened to make her backside this big.
So she shouldn’t be the one throwing shade at skinny women.
The video is available on Nicki’s YouTube page. *Please note that discretion is recommended when viewing as it contains images and language that will offend.
Watch for yourself and see if those skinny women have good reasons to take issue with it, though, to be fair, it seems that we’re getting used to being easily offended these days.
My skinny women not gone let Nicki get away with what she said though right?
