A protest against a ban on female driving in Saudi Arabia has yielded 16 arrests. The demonstration planned for Saturday, October 26, saw only a few dozen women with international licenses take to the streets.

The “Women's driving is a choice” campaign was deterred by governmental threats to fine and jail those breaking the law.

“[Laws] will be applied against violators and those who demonstrate in support of this cause,” a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry warned.

However, 60 brave drivers still chose to protest, Russia Today reported. The fine for six women pulled over by police in Riyadh was 300 riyals ($80 / €60). Other demonstrators were stopped in Jeddah and the Eastern Province.

Meanwhile, the protesters' website has been hacked, and the song posted above played on the landing page. “No Woman, No Drive,” a cover of a Bob Marley hit, hints that driving can affect reproduction in women.
