High prices continue to keep customers at bay, while phablets are concerned

An increased number of device-makers have started offering phablet models on the market (with capable specifications), but the products are still far away from challenging the dominion of tablets.

Market watchers reported by DigiTimes claim that 6-inch phablets (tablets with phone capabilities) sales have been limited for now, due to increased competition coming from 7-inch slates.

For example, Sony’s first phablet, the Xperia Z Ultra has not been selling too well. To spice things up, the tech giant has taken away the cellular capabilities of the device and is currently offering it as a Wi-Fi-only mini tablet in Japan (at a cheaper price).

Price range seems to be a factor in why phablets haven’t been more widely adopted. For instance Samsung, LG and Sony all sell the products with pricing ranging between $500 / €365 and $800 / €585, while offering the 7-incher with prices between $150 / €109 and $400 / €292.

Nevertheless, as smartphone displays have been upgraded to 5-inch, phablets (6-inch) might be given a chance to proliferate, too.
