Sir David Attenborough has launched a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo.com. The campaign is expected to run through December 11, 2013, and fetch at least $160,000 (€118,625).

“I urge you to join with me in ensuring a positive future for the mountain gorilla, its habitat and all of us, near and far, that rely on both to be in good shape for our collective wellbeing,” David Attenborough asks.

As detailed by the wildlife expert and nature broadcaster, this money will be given to the International Gorilla Conservation Programme, whose goal is to help safeguard the world's remaining gorilla population.

Specifically, Sir David Attenborough plans to use the money raised by means of this campaign to keep the species from going extinct due to poaching and habitat loss.

The wildlife expert says that this goal can be achieved if human communities that these apes share their natural habitats with learn to pay closer attention to the threats they face and support, sometimes even promote, conservation efforts.

As explained on the official website for the fundraising campaign, “The project fosters cooperation across national borders and empowers communities to monitor, protect and benefit from maintaining a healthy population of mountain gorillas.”

The money will also serve to pay rangers in charge of protecting these animals, and financially support breeding programs, Ecorazzi reports.
