Grammy-winning singer Sinead O’Connor has long been battling depression, telling Oprah a while back that her first suicide attempt was in 1999, on her birthday. While she appeared in higher spirits in recent weeks, the other day, O’Connor was on Twitter asking suicide tips from her followers.

The singer has gotten a lot of media attention in recent months, after she started using her Twitter and her official blog to place ads looking for a “boy (man) friend.”

However, things seemed to take a turn for the worse at the end of last week, when Sinead tweeted darker thoughts: she said she wanted to die and that the only thing that stopped her from taking her own life was not knowing how to do it without her children finding out.

Then, she asked her followers for tips to kill herself in a manner that would not be immediately apparent to her four children, as E! Online points out.

“Had to go psychiatrist for routine renew prescription etc. She says I’m a bad mum and mental for talking so openly about sex in public. So now I wish suicide wud kill me,” Sinead wrote.

“Anyway...If any1 knows how I can kill myself...Without my kids finding out I did it deliberately pls tell me,” she added, stressing that the only reason she hadn’t done it yet was because she was terrified her children would know she took her own life.

The same e-zine says that some of her fans were so worried about her mental state that they alerted the police that she was suicidal.

This prompted a blog post from Sinead, who explained that, while she believed suicide was a sin, she also thought it was best to speak out if she had suicidal thoughts than just be quiet and act upon them.

“Its a lie too, suicide. It doesn’t solve your problems. It only makes them infinately, un-countably worse. Its a permanent solution to a temporary problem,” she wrote.

“BUT Its ok to FEEL suicidal. That is most definately neither a sin nor a sign necessarily, of madness. Its quite normal to feel that way sometimes,” the singer added.

“And its not only ok but MANDATORY u SAY when u feel suicidal and ask for help.. And anyone who criticizes u can [expletive] off so they can for themselves and is only afraid of their own ‘madness’,” she further wrote.
