Together with the Avaaz team, Leonardo DiCaprio is now trying to gather as many as 1,000,000 signatures which would compel high officials worldwide to turn large portions of the Antarctic Ocean into wildlife sanctuary.

Apparently, a decision with respect to this issue is to be taken later this week, when government representatives will meet behind closed doors.

Leonardo DiCaprio and the people working with Avaaz hope that the public's involvement will leave high officials with no choice but to carry out their discussions in the open.

As well as this, it is believed that the 1,000,000 signatures will silence countries like Russia and South Korea, which are known for opposing the establishing of the world's largest marine sanctuary in the Antarctic Ocean.

“Let's change negotiators' minds with a massive wave of public pressure -- Avaaz will surround the meeting with hard-hitting ads, and together we'll deliver our message to delegates via a deafening cry on social networks,” reads their appeal to the general public.

Those wishing to sign the petition can do so here.
