Shigeru Miyamoto, the leading game developer working at Nintendo, says that he has no plans to work in a leadership position on the next version of Mario because he wants to focus more on smaller and more innovative projects.

He is quoted by DualShockers as saying that, “Creating a game of the caliber of Super Mario 3D World takes a lot of energy and there is little chance that I could take the time to work on the next Mario.”

“However, I want to get involved again and more deeply in the development of smaller projects, but that doesn’t mean it will be a modest download-only title or something like that.”

Miyamoto has expressed a desire to limit his role inside Nintendo since around 2010, saying that he wants to see younger developers step into his shoes and lead the big franchises forward.

He wants to work on smaller games in order to make sure that those who learn from him understand that even on titles linked to Mario and Zelda innovation is necessary in order to keep players involved.

The developer adds, “It is not impossible for me to work on a new game as the main producer in the future, but even when I’m not directly in charge of a project, I always look at what the teams does in terms of gameplay, and I trust them. Don’t worry about Mario!”

Super Mario 3D World is set to be launched on November 22 in the United States and one full week later in Europe.

The new Wii U exclusive is expected to sell well during the holiday season in order to boost the fortunes of the Nintendo home console, which failed to hit its targets for the past six months.

The company has suggested that more Mario and Zelda games will be announced for 2014.
