Shift Linux, a Linux project created by the Neowin community, has reached a new version, 0.5. This distribution is based on Morphix Linux and it is a Debian derivative Live CD.

Shift Linux has access to all the software just like any other Debian based distributions. Shift was produced in several versions, with Fluxbox as default desktop manager for low-end computers, while the more powerful computers can use Shift with KDE and Gnome as default desktop managers.

Neowin's distribution was designed to give the user an experience of being part of the Neowin community and to be a simple, easy to use Live CD. The team behind Shift Linux is made up of persons with a wide range of experiences and talents, everyone contributing in his/her own way.

Here are some of the applications included in Shift Linux:

• GVim - Text Editor • Revelation - Password Manager • gDesklets - Eye Candy Widgets • GIMP - Image Editor • Postscript Viewer • XSane - Image scanning program • gThumb - Image Viewer • xpdf - PDF Viewer • Icedove • Iceweasel - Web Browser • Pidgin - Internet Messsenger • GnomeMeeting - Internet Telephony • Gwget - Download Manager • Liferea - Feed Reader • XChat - IRC Client • gFTP - FTP Client • AbiWord - Word Processor • Gnumeric - Spreadsheet • gLabels - Label Designer • Rhythmbox - Media Player • Streamtuner - Stream Browser • Xine - Multimedia Player

The team is planning to launch version 1.0 as the next release, built on a different structure, with customized applications and a new repository with the most popular applications and packages. Everything in Shift is GPLed, so if you want to install non-GPL licensed packages, you will have to download them from the appropriate sites or repositories.

With the current release, 0.5, the team has launched a new site, with a fresh design and a lot of new features. The design was created by Max Belanger, while the coding part was done by Dave Legg and Simon Andrews.
