7 years ago, a pair of sheepdogs were brought to Warrnambool’s Middle Island, located close to the Australian south coastline.

Since then, the dogs have proven time and time again that they can protect not just sheep, but also other animals.

The adorable creatures that these sheepdogs are now looking after are Little Penguins. These birds owe their name to the fact that they are the smallest species of penguins currently known to science.

One such penguin grows to be just 13 inches (about 33 centimeters) tall, which is why local foxes tend to label them as the perfect snack. Tree Hugger says that, ever since the dogs first arrived on the island until present day, no fox has managed to hunt down and eat another penguin again.

Conservationists say that the island is now home to 200 breeding adults, and that the local population for this species is expected to increase in the years to come.
