You won't be going there anytime soon, but your name can

You will never go to space, well at least not before the prices for a seat on a Virgin Galactic flight go down quite a bit, but you can at least send your name – to Mars, no less.

Best of all, it's all free, all you have to do is sign up your name on a dedicated site.

Your name and maybe even your message will travel with the MAVEN spacecraft that will eventually orbit Mars.

The MAVEN mission will study Mars' upper atmosphere. The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft is due to launch this November.

Its mission, as the name suggests, will be to study Mars' atmosphere to determine what it's made up of and, more importantly, how the planet ended up with so little of it. Initially, Mars had a thick atmosphere similar to the Earth’s.

The spacecraft will also take a DVD with it. On the DVD will be the names of everyone who submits theirs. People are also encouraged to submit a message, in the form of a haiku, and three of them will be selected by public vote.
