Semplice Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian's Sid unstable branch that aims to provide a clean and simple user experience. A new version has just been released and it's quite different from any of the previous versions.

The new Semplice 7 preview version has been dubbed "Comfortably Numb" and it’s a different and unique Linux distro. It still looks familiar to most of the users, but there is no dock, launcher, or any other feature of this kind. It might seem odd for a distro, but it works and it's all done with the power of the right click.

The Semplice devs have been ahead of the curve, and they were among the first to add systemd by default, for example. The same might be said about their approach to desktop design, which might be really ahead of its time.

In any case, the new version is different enough that it will definitely fall in a very specific category. People will either like it or not, there won't be a middle ground.

Semplice 7 is not your average cup of tea

The operating system is actually powered by a new desktop environment, called Vera. This is a new project, but it's interesting enough and we will probably hear a lot more about it in the coming months.

"It's my pleasure to announce the immediate release of Semplice 7-preview, codenamed 'Comfortably Numb'. After long delays on the Semplice 7 cycle, we are now pretty confident to make a preview release available to the general public. Although this release comes pretty late in the development cycle and then it's pretty feature-packed and similar to the upcoming final version, there are still some rough edges that we need to polish."

"This preview snapshot ships with the latest sid  (2014-11-27) and Linux kernel 3.17.2. New features include our new vera desktop environment (with a new control center), pulseaudio enabled by default, chromium replaced by iceweasel, a desktop launcher, an interactive tutorial and many more things," reads the official announcement.

Some things are still missing and you might notice that. However, this is a preview version, so this is all quite normal. It could be considered more like a proof of concept than anything else.

A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. You can download Semplice Linux 7 Preview right now from Softpedia. Please keep in mind that Semplice Linux is not ideal in production systems, and there is no guarantee that everything works, especially since this is still under development.
