Semplice Linux, a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian's Sid unstable branch with the goal to provide a simple, lightweight, fast, and cool environment, is now at version 3.0.

The current release of Semplice, 6, has been dubbed “Stairway to Heaven” and features a large number changes and improvements.

“This release brings many important performance-related changes, such as systemd as the default init system, a new desktop-optimized kernel and compressed memory. Also, we have rewritten our menu builder, alan. With this release, the central part of the system, the menu, is faster than ever.”

“You may notice that the codename of this release doesn't come from a Pink Floyd work. We selected a Led Zeppelin codename this time to say happy birthday to our team member Luca, which just today is eighteen years old,” reads the official announcement. Highlights of Semplice Linux 6 (Stairway to Heaven):

• The Semplice Live System is a Semplice installation that works from a CD. With Semplice Live, you can try Semplice without doing changes to your computer; • Openbox is the default Window Manager used in Semplice. This, with other applications, makes the default desktop of Semplice Linux; • This release contains a desktop optimized Linux kernel 3.12.7. It is based on the pf-kernel; • Chromium, the unbranded version of the famous Google Chrome Web Browser, has been implemented by default. It is based on the Blink rendering engine; • Exaile 3.3.2 and GNOME MPlayer 1.0.8 have been implemented; • Pidgin Internet Messenger 2.10.7, a graphical, modular Instant Messaging client, has been added; • Abiword 2.9.2 and Gnumeric 1.12.9 have been added.

A complete list of changes can be found in the official announcement. Download Semplice Linux 6 right now from Softpedia.

Because of its instability, Semplice Linux is not ideal in production systems, and there is no guarantee that everything works, now or in the near future.
