Come 2013, fans of Selena Gomez will have somewhat of a shock when Harmony Korine's “Spring Breakers” comes out and she sheds her good Disney girl image for good. She says it's all a part of her journey to be taken seriously as an actress.

Selena and the other members of the cast of the film, which is already getting movie buffs excited, sat down for an interview with the latest issue of Interview magazine and, as expected, the question of why she'd choose such a racy role came up.

It was about time she put an end to the rut she'd found herself in, the gorgeous actress and singer tells the mag.

Obviously, there was no other way to break free of her Disney-made image than by showing audiences she's all grown up now, which is precisely what “Spring Breakers” aims to do.

“I was getting kind of repetitive in terms of the roles I was picking, and I really wanted to do something that was completely different. It was a mark thing for me – like, 'This is what I want to be doing',” Selena explains.

The move was carefully planned and will hopefully help her make a name for herself as a solid actress, one known for her skills in front of the camera and not her Disney reputation.

“I want to be taking myself seriously as an actress, and this was definitely a stretch. I mean, I’d never smoked a cigarette before in my entire life. It was really funny – they had to show me how to do it,” the star says.

The film also stars James Franco, who plays a white rapper / gangsta resembling Kevin Federline – K-Fed, Britney Spears' ex-husband.

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson appear alongside Selena as a group of teens who rob a store to fund their spring break.

When they're busted and imprisoned for robbery, a drugs and arms dealer (Franco) comes to their aid and bails them out but, in return, has them do some dirty work for him.

Because countless paparazzi shots from the set of the film leaked online, interest in the film has been increasing in recent weeks.
