Yesterday marked the World Environment Day, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) decided that this was the perfect opportunity to launch its latest international campaign, whose slogan is Seize Your Power.

It may very well be that this year's World Environment Day revolved around raising awareness about how the practice of wasting food is affecting our planet, yet the WWF appears to have something else on its mind.

The focus of its Seize Your Power campaign is on encouraging governments and financial institutions worldwide to up their investments in green energy sources, the organization explains on its official website.

More precisely, the WWF hopes that, within the following 12 months, investments in this energy sector will increase by at least $40 billion (€30.57 billion) on a global scale.

The current Director General of WWF International, Jim Leape, explained the organization's decision to roll out this international campaign as follows:

“We are running out of time. We know that if we continue to rely on fossil fuels we will face a future of worsening air pollution and an increasingly inhospitable climate.”

“It is now our collective responsibility to commit to the future we want. We call on political and financial decision-makers to seize their power to make the switch to clean and sustainable renewable energy and end the inertia of coal, oil and gas,” Jim Leape added.

The WWF explains that, unless its plea is given the attention it deserves, CO2 levels will only increase in the years to come.

It goes without saying that this will have a devastating impact not just on natural ecosystems, but also on human society.

“We need to act and invest money now in clean, renewable energy to limit dangerous climate change, to reduce the risks to human health from dirty fossil fuels, to fast-track access to energy, and to safeguard our collective future,” conservationist Samantha Smith pointed out.

The organization asks that people show their support for this green-oriented campaign by signing a pledge addressed to financial institutions and governments worldwide.

The pledge is made available here.
