Yesterday, Check Point customers who wanted to visit the site, or those who wanted to send emails to the company, found that the world renowned security firm’s website wasn’t working anymore because its representatives forgot to renew the domain name.

According to The Register, Check Point representatives blamed Network Solutions, the domain host, for sending the renewal agreement to the wrong email address.

“There was no security issue whatsoever. The domain record was wrong and redirected for approximately 23 minutes. During that time DNS servers around the world were updated with the wrong record. We corrected the issue at 15:30 IL time (13:30 UK) on Monday April 2nd,” company representatives explained.

Of course, 23 minutes for them may translate into hours for some users, depending on the setting of the DNS servers.

While the incident may be amusing to some, experts warn that the consequences of such an error could be serious, mainly because when control over a domain is lost, so is control over the email for that domain.
