Link Popularity for a certain domain name represents the "image" of your site in terms of quality and relevance related to other websites. The PageRank value is directly influenced by the link popularity, because the PageRank algorithm will determine the importance of a domain name or of a single page URL based on a numerical probability calculation that uses the relative relations between web pages.

In this context, the one-way links (the links to your website that are present on other websites pointing to your domain or specific webpages) play a crucial role in the determination of links' popularity and as a consequence, the page rank value. As compared to other SEO (search engine optimization) methods, the building of one-way links is an effective method to improve your link popularity.

One-way links are also called non reciprocal links, because they represent a vote given to your website or domain name from another website and you are not forced to place a reciprocal link to your web pages. In order to obtain as many one-way links as you can, your site must have a unique and attractive design and should contain original content written by persons with authority and solid technical skills.

If your website has interesting articles published periodically and syndicated through RSS there are many chances to obtain many one-way links from other people. You can also build one-way links by submitting your website to links' directories.

But you must be sure that the specific website does not use the attribute "nofollow" in their META tags, which practically stops the search engine robots to follow the link and in this case you lose a valuable incoming one-way link. Your site visibility will be increased also if you post pertinent comments to blogs or allow others to submit your website content to the most appreciated blogs such as digg.com for example. If it is possible, your website navigation should have a tree structure meaning that on every page there should be links for "deeper" web pages.

This procedure will increase the relative link popularity for all pages of your website. If you try to start a campain of building one-way links, you will notice that there are only a few ways and it takes a long time. As compared to link exchange, which generates reciprocal links, one-way links will determine a higher link popularity.

Besides the presence of incoming links, the link popularity can be affected by many other factors, such as: the page rank of the site which provides the one-way links, the number of incoming links and more. You can check your number of incoming links on Google for example by typing in the search field the next code modified for your own top level domain name:
