Microsoft promotes the Surface Pro 3 as the perfect laptop replacement and it seems like some companies and organizations across the world are indeed ready to replace their notebooks with Redmond's new device.

The Seattle Children's Hospital has decided to purchase Surface Pro 3 and give up on laptops, pointing to some of the features available in Microsoft's new tablet as the key reasons for this transition.

Dr. Maida Chen, director of the Pediatric Sleep Center, says that the bigger screen and the digital pen that allows doctors to quickly take notes and write down patient info clearly come in handy, so no other devices or documents are needed.

“When we have very quickly evolving situations with patients, jotting down notes is still the way that most clinicians go,” Chen explains.“The fact that we can electronically do it with the ease of a pen and something that is incredibly responsive and have electronic capture of that data is something that would revolutionize our practice here.”

Hospital CIO Wes Wright also adds that the Surface Pro 3 brings the familiar Windows interface and the desktop wherever you go, while also providing excellent portability and productivity.

“Surface Pro 3 brings that desktop-like experience to a mobile device,” something that is increasingly important to clinicians,” he says. “We look at weight, we look at battery life, application compatibility – it was kind of a no-brainer for us.”

However, the hospital hasn't said anything about the number of tablets they are planning to purchase or about a potential deal with Microsoft that could bring them cheaper devices. The Surface Pro 3 comes with quite a hefty price tag, so a big budget is clearly needed to purchase lots of tablets.

The top-of-the-range Surface Pro 3 comes with a price tag of nearly $2,000 (€1,500), meaning that if the hospital wants to purchase 50 such tablets, a budget of at least $100,000 (€73,000) is needed.

Truth is that the Surface Pro 3 indeed comes with state-of-the-art hardware, including i3, i5, or i7 processors, 4 or 8 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of storage space and a 12-inch screen.

Microsoft says that the Surface Pro 3 provides up to 9 hours of continuous browsing and the battery can be recharged to 80 percent in just 2 hours. A full battery recharge is guaranteed in 4 hours, according to Redmond's very own statistics released a few days ago.
