Yesterday, Heidi Klum and Seal put rumors to rest by issuing a joint statement announcing their decision to separate. Hours later, he sat down with Ellen DeGeneres and openly talked about how the shocking decision also took them by surprise as well.

Video of that segment of the interview is below, embedded at the end of the article.

Whereas other celebrities might have wanted to keep the topic of the divorce off limits, Seal made it a point of bringing it up to offer a better explanation to all those who received the news as a shock.

They were shocked too, he says. However, things like this do happen in life, but breaking up doesn't mean he no longer loves Heidi or that the past 8 years they've been together will simply go down the drain or be forgotten.

“I think we were shocked. You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say 'I do' and you say '’til death do us part.' 'Those vows hold value. They are not just words,” the singer tells Ellen.

Even if his marriage to Heidi wasn't meant to be, he will always love, admire and respect her as both woman and mother to their four children, the best thing to come out of the marriage.

“these things happen. The thing that I’m most proud about this great woman who I married - and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart - is that together she has given me four incredible gifts, four beautiful children,” he says.

“She still, in my opinion, is the most wonderful woman in the world. I think our priority was to remain civil and do this thing with dignity. We still very much love each other,” Seal adds.

He doesn't get into more details of the divorce but, considering the things he already said, he doesn't need to anymore.

In the same interview, Seal explains why he's still wearing his wedding ring, saying it's a symbol for how he feels about Heidi: he will probably take it off sometimes later, but not right now.
