Seagate announced yesterday that it will soon start shipping of the largest hard disk, 120GB, aimed at mobile systems. In the same time, the producer will launch a hard disk having 100GB which will be available in two versions 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm. The 120GB model will have a rotation speed of 5400 rpm.

The company declared that these products have been developed as a result of a study that pointed out the necessity of more generous storing space for mobile systems. This trend is a normal consequence of the adopting of multimedia functions and related files which have large dimensions. While increasing capacity, the solutions have to meet the portability standards, to resist shocks and to offer a sufficient lifespan.

At the other end of this segment are the notebook users for who the price/performance ratio is critical. This category prefers small capacity and low speed models.

Although for now, the 7200 rpm drives aimed at notebooks represent only a market segment, once the users of these systems will start demanding more, the performances of the components will also increase and in a short time, they will match the ones of desktops.

The Momentus hard disk series is not aimed only at notebooks, its design allowing them to be included into CE devices, printers, copying machines, printers, non-mission critical blade servers and other environments where a high level of vibrations is present. The Momentus drives resist 900 G shocks in standby and 250 Gs if the drive is reading/writing data. Another advantage of these drives is the power consumption level which is much better than the one of the previous models.
