You might even get to see it up and running at CES

CES will start on Monday the 8th. Thankfully, I'll go away for the weekend and probably won't here a thing about it until I come back just in time to see it happen. In other words, this is the last pre-CES coverage story you'll ever hear from me in 2007. I could have left things as they were, but this is quite a big deal especially for people who enjoy having all their collection of movies ripped onto the hard drives. So here it goes.

Seagate is currently the only producer that offers 750GB of storage space onto a single drive. The other magnetic storage makers are still fighting some high manufacturing costs regarding the mass release of large hard drives, motive for which the competition can only offer 500GB hard drives. That's not bad, but Seagate delivers 50% more space on the same 3.5 drive. And as it turns out, they will be able to offer even more.

Seagate has reacted to several rumors that filled the websites regarding a possible launch of the expected 1 TB version of its Barracuda 3.5" desktop hard drive at the Consumer Electronics Show. Company spokesman Michael Hall said nothing regarding the possible showcase of such a product at CES but claimed that the firm expects "to be the first to deliver 1 TB hard drives in high volume for global customers during the first half of 2007."

The drive will be the company's second perpendicular large capacity hard drive, following the 750 GB version that is on sale since the moment of its launch in April 2006. While the company said nothing about the expected launch date, most of us (me included) still hope that the 1TB giant will show up at CES.
