With the world waiting for the official release of Intel's next-generation desktop platform, Seagate has decided to introduce a new hard drive to its Savvio family of 2.5-inch SAS 2.0 enterprise solutions. The company's latest addition is said to deliver a high performance level, while using about 70% less power than that of competing 3.5-inch hard drives. As with Seagate's previous Savvio 10K.3 hard drive, the new 15K.2 Savvio hard drive is manufactured using Seagate's Unified Storage architecture, and delivers improved manageability, integration, security and performance.

“Server and storage array requirements in the enterprise today are especially focused on lowering power and cooling  costs; satisfying growing application performance needs; and meeting government and industry compliance regulations,” said Sherman Black, senior vice president, Marketing and Strategy, Core Products Group, Seagate Technology LLC. “The Savvio(R) 15K.2 drive and our Unified Storage(TM) architecture, address these needs head-on, by providing IT departments with a best-in-class foundation that reduces storage complexity, costs, and provides peace of mind.”

Created with sever environments in mind, the new Savvio hard drive has been designed to deliver storage capacities of 146GB and 73GB, combined with a SAS 2.0 interface for high-speed of 6Gb/s. Adding to that a platter speed of 15.000RPM and the on-board Seagate PowerTrim technology, the new Savvio hard drives are set to deliver impressive, server-grade performance, while saving power consumption by up to 70%, over similar 3.5-inch 15.000RPM hard drives.

Moreover, according to Seagate, its new Savvio 15K.2 HDD is also the first small form factor 15K enterprise self-encrypting hard drive that takes advantage of the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) government-grade encryption.

Regarding the availability of the new Savvio 15K.2 and Savvio 10K.3 hard drives, the company has mentioned that they will begin shipping in December, while SED-featured models are said to be made available sometime in Q1 2009.
