Seagate announced that its new Cheetah hard disk drives series have been integrated by Xyratex in its enterprise quality class data storage subsystems. The Cheetah NS is one the high efficiency, high performance disk drives from Seagate and Xyratex integrated it in their 4GB SBOD storage system. The Cheetah is a hard disk drive with impressive features for the enterprise class of storage systems. It is a 10k rpm drive built with mission critical networked applications in mind that require high performance and a low power consumption. When compared to other enterprise class 10k rpm drives using the standard 3.5 inch format, the Cheetah offers a "series of advantages including vastly improved capacity and performance statistics, and a 33 percent reduction in power consumption" according to the Seagate press release.

"The need to provide solutions with reduced energy consumption is changing the look and feel of IT environments," said Sherman Black, senior vice president and general manager, Seagate Enterprise Compute business. "The Cheetah NS drive provides measurable energy savings and operational advantages that will complement the enhanced storage system technology Xyratex delivers to market. Our latest drive technology will assist Xyratex in delivering solutions that meet data center managers' power, performance and capacity requirements. We look forward to working with Xyratex to roll out this latest drive technology."

"Power efficiency is a leading industry concern and Xyratex is embracing power saving technology, leading the way in its integration into storage solutions," said Todd Gresham, executive vice president, Networked Storage Solutions, Xyratex. "The qualification of Seagate's Cheetah NS drive enhances the overall efficiency of Xyratex's 4Gb SBOD by more than 20 percent. In addition, customers benefit from increased capacity and advanced performance features. Xyratex values its partnership with Seagate and looks forward to more industry firsts going forward".

Using the speedy Cheetah NS, the Xyratex storage subsystems are gaining reliability and performance, as the Seagate drive uses low power levels to operate and its heat signature is very low, delivering this way a twofold power saving: first through reduced energy consumption and then, because of the low dissipated heat, it reduces the need of special air conditioned rooms, with low temperatures.
