Not long after it released the Savvio 10K.4 enterprise hard drive, with a capacity of 600GB and 10,000 RPM, the company is once again addressing the enterprise segment with a device aimed for use in multi-drive storage environments. Described by the hardware maker as "the industry's first 2TB enterprise-class drives featuring 6Gb SAS," the new hard drive from the Constellation ES series seeks to enable, in addition to the data security that enterprise customers see as mandatory, high-speed storage with high capacities, enterprise-class reliability and high power efficiency.

The fourth-generation, 3.5-inch Seagate Constellation ES series boasts models with capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. These devices enable a data density of up to 76TB per square foot. The storage units can operate on both the 6Gbps SAS or SATA 3Gbps interfaces, have 16MB of buffer memory (or 64MB for the SATA model), run at 7200 RPM and have an MTBF (mean time before failure) of 1.2 million hours. The drives also feature the PowerChoice optimized power and cooling technology and a dual processor. This last component enables transfer rates of up to 150MB/s.

"Nearline is the fastest growing segment in enterprise storage and Seagate is committed to meeting the market demands of its OEM and system integrator partners in this space," Carla Kennedy, vice president, Seagate Enterprise Product Line Management, said. "Seagate's leadership in technology development, volume manufacturing and supply chain execution has resulted in an exemplary next-generation nearline solution. The Constellation ES drive tackles the concerns of shrinking IT budgets, floor space constraints and energy consumption, efficiently and cost-effectively."

"Our customers face challenges requiring the cost-effective use of space while maintaining performance and reliability," Howard Shoobe, senior manager, Storage Product Management, Dell, added. "This new nearline drive provides twice the capacity of previous drives with the performance and the robust design of SAS while maintaining best value in terms of dollar-per-gigabyte." The 2TB Constellation ES hard disk drive may be accompanied by an SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) option and comes with a five-year warranty.
