Those who think PETA is only concerned with the wellbeing of farm animals and pets could not be more wrong. The organization is also committed to protecting fish, which it considers to be highly intelligent creatures.

Hoping to raise awareness about how cruel it is to eat fish, two PETA beauties attended this year's Coney Island Mermaid Parade on Saturday, June 22.

The gals were scarcely dressed, and held up signs saying that “Fish Are Friends, Not Food.”

They hoped that those who chanced to cross their paths will consider changing their dietary habits after learning more about fish from them.

“Scientific studies show that fish are intelligent, sensitive animals who experience pain and fear when they are hooked or netted and pulled from the water.”

“Fish are smart, can use tools, and have impressive long-term memories and sophisticated social structures,” PETA writes on its official website.
