Savannah Guthrie talks about awkward interview with Kate Gosselin, says she feels sorry for her twins

One week ago, Kate Gosselin and twins Cara and Mady stopped by The Today Show to talk to Savannah Guthrie about life post-reality show and, in Kate’s case, post-divorce. Though she had brought the girls on to have their side of the story out there, they refused to talk, which made the whole sit-down very “crazy,” says Guthrie.

Savannah and co-anchor Matt Lauer were on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live on Bravo the other day, and among other things, she got into the details of that extremely painful to watch interview with Kate, Cara and Mady, which you will also find embedded below, at the end of the article.

“I was really surprised. They came on, and I thought the girls had something on their minds – they wanted to get it off their chests,” she said.

Instead, they just sat there and mumbled and refused to answer several of her questions. Not even their mother goading them was enough to get them to talk, as you can see for yourself.

Still, Guthrie believes the awkwardness might have also had something to do with the fact that the girls were nervous though, in all honesty, that seems a bit difficult to believe since the girls practically grew up on TV because of the family’s reality show, the once very successful TLC series Jon and Kate Plus 8.

“I was really sympathetic to them. It's not easy to get on national television – this isn't something they do every day, live every morning. They're 13-year-old girls. I felt bad for them,” Guthrie says.

“I honestly was just thinking, this is crazy. Does it look as crazy [as it feels on the inside]? Then I checked my twitter feed… then I saw Matt after. It was insane,” she continues.

Asked if Kate Gosselin is just as unlikable in person as she comes across on TV, the Today co-anchor refuses to answer, asking if she can’t use her “plead the fifth” card from another segment of the same show, which sees guests forced to answer all questions but one, for which they can “plead the fifth.”
