It both powers the items and lets them communicate with a computer

Satechi took a page out of the book read by all power strip makers and built the UH-12P 12-port USB hub.

The 12-port hub is essentially a power strip with USB 2.0 ports instead of power connectors.

Granted, 12 may not be accurate, as there are 13 in total, though one of them actually makes the connection to a PC.

That leaves 11 ports placed on the so-called top side of the strip and a twelfth connector on the end, opposite of the one that links to a computer.

Power is provided by a small adapter and it is possible to deliver electricity to just six of the 12 ports at any one time, as they are split in two sets.

As for the upstream USB cable, it measures about a meter (3 feet) and supports USB 2.0 speeds. The price is of $29.99 / 22.76 Euro.
