14 DAY TRIAL // At the end of last month, a rep for Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed that she and husband Matthew Broderick were about to expand their family with two new members, with twins from a surrogate mother. Taking a little time off from shopping for baby clothes and furniture, the actress sat down with Access Hollywood to share some of her joy, as well as her disbelief at the way the media handled the situation.
Speaking of the babies, Parker reveals that, while she would have been thrilled by just one child, hearing she would be getting twins was like the happiest day in her life. However, the star stresses, she only came to the conclusion to resort to a surrogate mother after realizing the complications she had sustained while trying to get pregnant all these years were preventing her from carrying a pregnancy to term. So, after due consideration and plenty of talks with Matthew, she came to the final decision – and she does not or will never regret it, Parker adds.
“I’m excited. I’m in disbelief. I’m really grateful. I feel really fortunate. My son is so excited, my husband is so excited. Well, you know, we’ve been trying to expand our family for a number of years and we actually have explored a variety of ways of doing so. This was one of the things we discussed with seriousness that had real possibilities for us. We didn’t expect [twins]. I think after a certain amount of time, you tend to hold your hopes at bay a bit so as not to be disappointed. One really would have been thrilling and we would’ve felt incredibly lucky. And two was a comedy!” the actress says for the aforementioned media outlet.
Because of the way the media usually behaves in such situations, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew tried to keep the pregnancy a secret for as long as they could, which also gave them plenty of time to speak with their son and make him realize he would have to “share his mama and papa” from then on. Still, Parker says, she can’t believe the kind of things some people (that is, the paparazzi) would do just to get a story, including stalking the surrogate mother and putting her through living hell.
“She’s had a friend who was thought to be her chased down a highway… This friend is nine months pregnant – chased down a highway by photographers and dare I call them ‘reporters.’ I guess that’s how they identify themselves. It’s crossed lines… Pretty much all the lines have been crossed. She is [OK] today, but she’s had a bad week in the very recent past… You understand what stress, worry and fear and being scared can do. She’s quite far along in this pregnancy and she’s carrying two children… There’s simply no excuse for doing this to somebody. It’s not acceptable.” the star says of what the surrogate mother had to go through after her identity was revealed to the media.
