Sara Gilbert knew fame from a very young age, and as such, she learned then too that some things that define her are best kept secret if she still wants to have a career. After years of personal struggle, she finally came out as lesbian and is now married to musician Linda Perry.

Even better, the two are now expecting their first child together: Sara is pregnant and she broke the news on The Talk the other day, as the video below can confirm. The other co-hosts on the show literally jumped for joy when they found out.

Sara delivered the happy news in front of the cameras

As you can see for yourself, Sara was supposed to face her fear of nails on this particular show, in a challenge that would have seen her, at least in theory, lying down on a bed of nails, with another one on top of her and a cinder block on top of that.

Clearly, even if she hadn’t been pregnant, she would have never carried this challenge through, but that doesn’t take anything from her emotional announcement.

As The Talk co-hosts, Aisha Tyler, Sharon Osbourne, Julie Chen, and Sheryl Underwood looked on, Sara explained that she couldn’t do the dare, as much as she always wanted to face and overcome her fears with it.

“I really do believe in facing your fears and doing things that make you uncomfortable, but I actually can't do the dare because I'm pregnant,” she announced, visibly struggling not to cry. Her friends on the show jumped up to hug her and congratulate her, while wife Linda was beaming from the audience.

The second tweet embedded under the video is one that she sent out during the show: no need to try and guess how she felt at the moment, because she says it best.

One big happy, modern family

This will be Sara and Linda’s first child together, but it’s not Sara’s first. The former actress and television personality has two other kids from a previous relationship with TV producer Allison Adler, Levi Hank and Sawyer, aged 9 and 7, respectively.

The reason Sara is crying in the video announcement below is probably that she’s overwhelmed with joy at the thought that she’s finally getting her dream family: she’s an out lesbian in an industry that isn’t exactly inclusive, and she’s married to a woman in a world in which same-gender marriage is not only frowned upon, but still mostly illegal.

She struggled for years with her orientation and then even more years to decide if she wanted to come out or not. Today, she can go on camera and proudly announce that she and her wife are expecting a child together.

That’s progress for you.
