And paves the way to Quad Crossfire

For an unknown reason, Ati's multi-GPU cards always seem to sell poorer when you compare them to Nvidia's multi-GPU solutions. Even if the cards are comparable in price and performance, somehow Nvidia stays ahead. The explanation regarding this somewhat interesting problem is not that simple but it has a lot to do with the fact that Ati GPUs consume a lot more power than their comparable Nvidia contenders. It is also strongly related to the fact that Ati makes the board but forgets to optimize the drivers for multi-GPU use.

This time, it seems that someone has got the recipe right (we hope!). It's the turn of the X1900 series to enter the multi-GPU arena because Sapphire has prepared a dual-GPU board featuring two X1950Pro GPUs on the same PCB. The clocks and the quantity of Dram are unknown but from what we can see in the picture, it seems that the card is pretty huge both in size and in power requirements (notice the two 6-pin power adapters?). We also don't know how well it performs but because it should drain at least as much power as a single 8800GTX, it would better work as fast too. In case it doesn't, the whole project is likely to remain just that, a project.

The card will probably be shown off at 2007's CES, though samples of it have already been running 3DMark benchmarks. No results have been released to the press but we hear that they perform pretty well. Moreover, this card is said to be capable of Crossfire operation. Quad Crossfire anyone?
