Sanyo has rolled out quite a few powerful projectors in the past, but the company's latest announcement is truly a large scale one. And I'm not referring to the number of products unveiled by the company (only 2), but to their features, which can only be described as "grand", whether we're talking in terms of physical size or projection capabilities.

There are quite a lot of things to be said about Sanyo's latest projectors, but we'll start with the optical system. Thus, according to the company, the two models use a photosynthesis optical system, which is based on a combo of three mirrors, thus enabling uniform light output from the two 330W NHSA lamps, uniform color development and high resolutions.

Furthermore, both projectors feature an Active Maintenance Filter system that automatically senses when air intake is blocked or clogged by dust or dirt, and uses this air flow as an indicator when to automatically reel the filter, eliminating the need for maintenance personnel to constantly open each filter casing for a manual check. The filter is mounted on a cartridge-type reel that simply advances the filter to the next clean filter automatically.

Moreover, the LP-XF70 and LP-WF20 provide pretty much the same connectivity features. Thus, both models incorporate DVI-D (HDCP) and S-video connectors as well as RS232 In/Out control terminals. Furthermore, both are compatible with the same computer-generated resolutions (UXGA / SXGA+ / SXGA / WXGA / XGA / SVGA / VGA / MAC), beside supporting the same video systems, PAL/SECAM/NTSC/NTSC4.43/ PAL-M/N.

Quite obviously, although they share some common technological features, the LP-XF70 and LP-WF20 also also include several individual features. Thus, for example, the 1.8-inch x 3 DLP LP-XF70 provides the highest brightness level in its class (9,000 lumens), while achieving presumably the industry's highest light efficiency from the AC100V adapter, namely a reduction of 37% with respect to the company's most energy-efficient model. Moreover, it displays images at a 1024 x 768 resolution, 2000:1 contrast ratio and a 4:3 aspect ratio.

On the other hand, the 1.2-inch x 3 DLP LP-WF20 can output solely 6,000 lumens, but offers a wider resolution, of 1366x800. This model also sports a 2000:1 contrast ratio, although the aspect ratio is of 17:10.

The two "monster" projectors from Sanyo have physical dimensions to match, measuring 530 mm x 267.5 mm x 757 mm, at an overall weight of 27.6 kilos. The $32,900 LP-XF70 and the LP-WF20, which will retail for "just" $23,500, will be available starting January 21 in Japan, with the worldwide launch probably following shortly.
