Interesting features, boring external design

The external design of a product is one of the most important factors that affect any purchase decision, at least when we're talking about home users. However, it would seem that the people at Sanyo have a whole different target audience, as their upcoming LP-Z2000 projector has one of the dullest and ugliest designs I've seen in quite a while, but, on the other hand, packs a set of very impressive features and enhanced functionality.

As you can plainly see in the picture, this thing looks just like a big (read huge) white box with a projection lens on the front side. Nevertheless, Sanyo's projector can really be described as an "ugly duckling", since the internal components and features this thing provides fully make up for the uninspired design.

Thus, the LP-Z2000 employs a 3 x 0.74 inch (1.87 cm) color LCD projection system, which helps it attain a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080, with a total of 6,220,800 pixels. It outputs images in a 16:9 aspect ratio, provides a brightness level of around 1200 lumens (165W UHP lamp), a contrast ratio of 15000: 1 and is also quite silent, since it has an overall sound output of just 19 decibels.

Moreover, it sports a manual zoom system (2X) and can be used in a wide variety of spaces, since it provides minimum/maximum projection distances of 1.2 / 18.4 meters. The device also features a new 3D color management system, which offers fuller and more vivid colors, as well as a very innovative "up and down left and right lens shift" function.

As any modern projector, this one also comes packed with a wide variety of connectivity options, including here two HDMI 1.3a interfaces, component and composite inputs, an S-video input and an analog RGB input for hooking the "monster" to a computer.

Sanyo's LP-Z2000 projector will hit the Japanese shelves for around 3,250 US dollars on November 1st, but it remains to be seen just how many customers will be able to go beyond the looks and choose it for its "soul" (in this case, technical features).
